This design came from two sources: the lyrics of Apple Blossom, a song by The White Stripes, and an appreciation of Japanese art. Apple Blossom was adopted as the state flower of Michigan - the home of Jack and Meg White - in 1897 because of its bouyant apple crops, but it is also a regular feature of Japanese pottery and wall hangings. Very kindly, The White Stripes approved the use of a lyric from Apple Blossom - "Put your troubles in a little pile and I will sort them out for you" - which we wanted to include as an acknowledgment of the band's influence on this painting.
